1. What services does ResNet provide?
- Sale of new and used Ethernet cards and cables at special prices for UO housing students, please
keep in mind all transactions will be billed to your student account
- Assistance installing and configuring computers for networking
- Network software for accessing the World Wide Web, downloading files via FTP,
and many other applications
- Assistance in solving problems and answering questions regarding
the network (outages, connectivity problems, etc.)
- A server containing recent news and information

2. What services does ResNet NOT provide?
- Help with operating system errors or problems
- Setup or installation of printers
- Help with hardware problems that don't involve ethernet cards
- Help with Gladstone account problems
These problems are dealt with by the Computing Center. For software
problems, go to room 202, or call 6-4412. For hardware problems,
go to room 108, or call 6-4403. For problems with your Gladstone
account, call 6-1758 or go to rooms 233 through 239.

3. What operating systems (OS) do ResNet support?
Our minimum requirements for the MacOS is system 7.1, for Windows
it is Windows 95. We offer limited support for Windows NT, Windows
3.1, and UNIX, but these operating systems will not receive first
priority.

4. Which ethernet card do I need for my computer?
See this complete list of cards.

5. Where can I get my ethernet card?
You can pick up your card directly from the ResNet office. We charge directly to your University account, and do not accept
cash, checks, or credit cards.

6. Are ethernet cords the same as telephone cords?
No, even though telephone cords will fit in an ethernet jack,
they don't work for ethernet connections. Ethernet cords are wider
than telephone cords, and are configured for use on a network.

7. What does it cost to use the ethernet network?
There are no additional fees for using ethernet, and the installation
is free if you are using a supported card. However, there is a $15 support fee to install unsupported ethernet
cards or for installation assistance in the Spencer View and Agate
St. apartments.

8. Can I buy a card from somebody else?
ResNet does not recommend you buy a card from another vendor,
for the following reasons:
- We will make sure you get the right card, and it works properly.
- With many vendors you will not be able to return the card after
you open the box, we will accept the card back for any reason
within 30 days, as long as it is resellable.
- If you buy a card from us, you are guaranteed to have a supported
card.

9. What is a supported card?
A supported card is any card we've sold you, as well as a card
on the supported card list.

10. What is ResNet's ethernet card buyback policy?
We buy back supported ethernet cards at about 50% of the current selling price. Low-demand cards will be bought back for lower
amounts.

11. How many ethernet ports are in each room?
Each room has at least one port per person.

12. What do I need to know to make my computer work on the network?
Refer to our documents page for setup instructions. You will not have to fill out any
forms or have an account to use our network.

13. Will I still need my old modem?
No, the ethernet card will take the place of the modem for internet
access. However, keep your old modem if you plan on using the
internet during the summer or after you move out of the Residence
Halls.

14. How do I get my email address?
Go to http://cc.uoregon.edu/docs/getanaccount.html. This site has all the information about getting your email address.

15. Can I play games over the network?
Yes, but they will only work over limited areas, because network
games are generally not written to work over large networks such
as the internet.

16. Can I use a mini hub in my room?
No, the architecture of the UO's network doesn't allow for more
computers than there are ethernet ports. It may appear to work,
however your network performance will not be as good as it would
without using the mini hub.

17. Can I run a server in my room?
You can run a server, but be aware of the UO's acceptable usage policy. The acceptable usage policy prohibits:
- Warez
- MP3's
- Accounts for non-UO users
- Commercial activity
Please keep your usage to a reasonable level.

18. Can I choose my computer name and get a static IP address?
It would be nice to offer fixed address assignments and customized
hostname entries to all of the Residence Hall users, but this
is simply not possible with current levels of staffing.

19. What will be the default name for my computer?
In order to accommodate users who would like to have a predictable
hostname-and-IP-address association on their Residence Hall computers,
we have adopted some conventions. By default, the format of your
host name is based on the IP address you obtain from the DHCP
server. For example, a machine that receives the IP address 128.223.196.35
will use the predefined hostname d196-35.uoregon.edu. This name can be used to advertise services.

20. What is DHCP?
DHCP is a server that automatically handles all the network information
needed by your computer (your IP address, name server, and router
information). If DHCP were not available, you would have to wait
for some central authority to statically assign an IP address
and additional network information.

21. How long will I have the same IP address with DHCP?
When you boot your computer in residence housing and receive an
IP address, you will hold onto that address for a significant
chunk of time, i.e. a couple of weeks. If you access a network
application on your computer at least once every two weeks, then
you will effectively keep the same address and hostname indefinitely.

22. Which buildings are online?
All the residence halls are online, as well as the Spencer View
apartments and the apartments on 18th & Agate. Westmoreland and
Moon Court apartments, along with East Campus houses, are not
connected. Use modem connections or computer labs.

23. Why doesn't the UO offer 100Mb service in the residence halls?
The current usage of the network doesn't require more speed, but
upgrading in the future will happen as usage increases.

24. Every time I try to use the Internet a dialup box appears,
how do I get rid of it? (Windows 95 Only)
Open the Internet control panel, click on the Connections tab, and uncheck the box Connect to the Internet as needed.

25. Can I use AOL with my ethernet connection?
Yes, to configure your AOL connection, either contact us to set it up for you, or contact AOL for more information.

26. Where can I find information about buying a computer?
The UO Microcomputer Services Buyer's Guide can answer your questions about buying computers and software.
